Travel agents book destination trips, cruises, leisure trips, and business trips for their customers nationally. Agents do research for their clients to find the best deals, and book their lodging, airfare, tours, transportation, rental cars and trip insurance. In addition to dealing with individual tourists, most travel agencies have a separate department devoted to making travel arrangements for business travelers and some travel agencies specialize in commercial and business travel only. There are also travel agencies that serve as general sales agents for foreign travel companies, allowing them to have offices in countries other than where their headquarters are located.

Owners and operators have years of experience working in the travel industry. They have communication skills, customer service skills; sales experience, and a well-rounded education about travel destinations all over the world. Travel Agents usually start working in an agency office.  Most offices require a high school diploma and an enthusiasm for travel.  Some travel agencies may prefer people with advanced degrees in history, business, communications or public relations. They take classes to keep up to date with the industry and to receive special certifications.  Travel experience is helpful, although not required. The American Society of Travel Agents offers correspondence courses and special trips aimed at people interested in becoming a travel agent.

Travel agencies purchase bathroom supplies, brochure holders, chairs, clocks, computer accessories, computers, desk lamps, desks, headsets, luggage tags, magazines, maps, office décor, office supplies, tables, telephones, and travel software.  They provide coffee, tea , water and refreshments for their customers to enjoy.
