As one of the highest ranking members of an organization, a COO can be found in a variety of settings. Corporations, public sector organizations, nonprofits, and other institutions employ a COO to oversee potential problems and improvements. These C level executives also have the pressure to perform by increasing profits or making operations more efficient. Besides managing production quotas and reporting to the board, they also work closely with the organizations CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and CFO (Chief Financial Officer).
The COO assists the CEO by ensuring all daily tasks in every department of the company are being carried out effectively and efficiently. Other major responsibilities for the COO include planning, managing, setting goals for the company and each department, set up and conducts meetings, and gives advice in planning for each department manager. The COO must know and understand what the entire company is doing which include quality assurance, the relationships between each department, and overall operational aspects.
Because much of a COO’s position entails formulating company policies and directing daily operations, most have at least a bachelor’s degree in business administration or in liberal arts.
C level executives purchase items such as office supplies, paper, copier, printers, fax machines, professional attire, accessories, suits, brief cases, office décor, office furniture, computers, laptops, calendars, dry erase boards, projectors, computer software and accessories, smart phones, and desk organizers.
To stay current in their field they attend trade shows, take continuing education courses and subscribe to online and offline business trade publications.
