In addition to general nutrition, some nutritionists specialize in nutrition education, pediatric nutrition, renal nutrition, or metabolic nutrition. Many nutritionists are solo or group practitioners who also have the administrative responsibilities of running a practice. In larger offices, nutritionists delegate these tasks to office managers and technicians. Nutritionists in private practice are responsible for developing a patient base, hiring employees, and keeping records.

Nutritionists may either have completed a three year BSc(nutrition) degree or a four year double degree BSc(Health Promotion)/BSc(Nutrition). Graduate nutritionists from a three year program typically undertake a further one year program of study I a specific professional area, such as dietetics, food science and technology, health promotion, or teaching.
